Tarapoto, Los Huingos Lodge

Los Huingos is the forest at the entrance to Tarapoto. It is a 15-minute motorcycle taxi ride from the Main Square of the City of Palms, on the edge of a dirt road known as Prolongación Alerta, where some of the forest’s trees have been left standing. The bungalows are arranged on both sides of the road, surrounded by gardens, flowers and cheerful butterflies. The brick bungalows are spacious and divided into two adjacent rooms. The atmosphere is pretty laid back and quiet, thanks to the location on the outskirts of the city. Prices include a simple breakfast and the use of a shared kitchen. The rooms have a mini-bar, private bathroom, terrace and a hammock right outside the window. From the lodge, guests can visit the Urku center, an animal refuge, or head into the Cordillera Escalera protected zone, where there are natural pools for bathing, including a small pool called the Pool of Love (“Poza del Amor”). A demanding three-hour climb leads to two waterfalls: the Bride’s Veil (“Velo de la Novia”) and Tamushal (on the Alto Silcillo road, at the end of Prolongación Alerta, entrance fee S/10 soles, Peruvian nationals S/6 soles, guide Juver Tuanama, 942902852, guided visit S/80 soles, boot hire S/3 soles).

Prices: Double room from S/100 to S/120 a night.

Los Perales is a family-run establishment set in a garden filled with fruit trees and offering first class service. The rooms are simple but clean, with private bathroom and a spectacular view of both the garden and the mountains. Paulino and his family are simple and welcoming people. From the lodge, it is possible to walk as far as Maras (crossing the bridge at Tunupa restaurant), where the entrance fee is S/10 Peruvian soles.
